  1. KST Spotlight on Trey McIntyre Interview

Trey McIntyre is the head choreographer for Malpaso’s Under Fire, which will be presented at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater on Feb 27th and 28th. KST was able to sit down with Mr. McIntyre and ask him some questions about his work!

McIntyre got involved with this project via the Joyce Theater in New York City, an initiative to send an American choreographer to work in Havana. Having traveled to Cuba twice before, McIntyre says he jumped at the opportunity.

“They gave me my choice of any company I wanted to work with,” he says. “I had seen videos of this young company and was drawn to them immediately. I knew they would be a really good fit for the kind of work I do.”

The company he chose was Malpaso.

Malpaso translates to “misstep”, however, McIntyre praises the team for their attention to detail and hard work ethic.

Screen shot 2015-02-18 at 9.36.28 AM

“They were a really easy company for me to work with for a lot of reasons,” McIntyre recalls. “They are incredibly disciplined and they focus on the work only. The language barrier helped us, because it fortified our relationship as only an artistic one.”

Trey did not use a translator when working with the dancers. He admits he had to work very hard physically to show the dancers what he needed them to do, and it was a process.

“That’s how I work,” McIntyre comments. “I’d rather be creating from what the energy is in that moment. The vocabulary that comes there to me in the studio is usually the most valuable. It made all of our focus that much sharper.”

McIntyre’s first trip to Cuba was as a guest of the Washington Ballet, the first American company to perform in Cuba during Castro’s reign. He recalls international media like The New York Times being there and panels of choreographers discussing their work. McIntyre said his first experience in Cuba really surged the wave of American interest in Cuban dance. His second visit was for personal growth and research. “I wanted to learn more about the culture and country [instead of] being on that big massive tour.”

On McIntyre’s third and most recent trip there, he teamed up with Malpaso and created his newest work, Under Fire. His inspiration came from a metaphor of beginning anew.Screen shot 2015-02-18 at 9.35.43 AM

“I had just ended ten years of my own dance company, the Trey McIntyre Dance Project, and I was going through my own internal, transitional process. It’s something that was both literal and symbolic—I had to get rid of all the paper I had. I burned it in a bonfire in my back yard. After everything had gone up in flames I moved the stick and realized that only the outside was burned, and the fire had compacted the inside, making it look more perfect.  I thought that was an interesting metaphor for human life in a way. When we try to change our exteriors, it makes us become more of who we really are.”

Under Fire is 21 minutes long and uses five songs, including music from Grandma Kelsey, a Boise, Idaho native. Sink or Swim and Fruits of My Labor are some of Kelsey’s covers in the Under Fire set.

“I had to have a blank slate going in because I didn’t know about the company yet, and I wanted make the work as I learned about them,” McIntyre says. “I have never worked with a company, including my own, that had such a razor sharp focus. They were so intense, and not ego-tripping. I wanted to implant on that experience.”

Trey also comments on how his work was received when it premiered in Cuba earlier this year. “Information travels differently there than it does here. There’s no cable TV, and internet isn’t easily accessible. Word travels in a more traditional way. But I didn’t hear one negative thing [about my work] in Cuba. Everybody said “Hey, this is pretty good.”

McIntyre is sure his work will resonate with Pittsburgh audiences as well.

“The piece is so personal and the dancers met me at that 100%. They are very vulnerable and generous with themselves and the work. It’s very nuancing… an athletic piece at the same time while being meditative. It’s an emotional work, too. There were some tears in the audience at the premiere.”

In addition to choreographing, McIntyre has also worked on multiple photography projects, and filmed, edited, and performed in short videos, which can be seen here.

Under Fire had its world premiere at the Teatro José Marti in Havana, Cuba on Jan. 30—but it will have its U.S. premiere at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater on Feb. 27 and 28th. Tickets and more info are available here!

  2. Pittsburgh Changemaker: Jessica Ruffin

Kelly Strayhorn Theater is presenting local leaders that have been changemakers in Pittsburgh. Whether they mentor, teach, sing or touch Pittsburgh with their art, KST acknowledges these pioneers. This is Our Story: KST Recognizes Pittsburgh Changemakers.

1- What do you do for the community now and why is it important?

I am fortunate enough to serve as the Director of Public Allies Pittsburgh. Public Allies is a national nonprofit with sites in 23 markets. Its mission is to advance diverse young leaders to strengthen communities, nonprofits and civic participation. This work is so important because it not only has a direct impact on the communities in which the Allies serve, but I also have the opportunity to impact the lives of those that are serving – providing them with access to professional or educational opportunities that otherwise might not have been available.

I am also deeply passionate about education and am constantly looking for opportunities that seek to alleviate some of the barriers that deny some of our region’s students from receiving a quality education. This passion has led me to serve as a Big Sister in Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Mentor 2.0 program at Brashear High School, and a volunteer interviewer with A+ Schools’ SchoolWorks program. I have also more recently served as a member of the Career Readiness Working Group through the Sprout Fund’s Digital Badging initiative.

2- What is one defining moment of your life? (When you decided to do what you’re doing now).

In 2006, I had the opportunity to serve as a Community Problem-Solving (CPS) Fellow with Coro Pittsburgh. CPS was a 10-week fellowship for African American students who had a passion for creating social change. In this program, each participant worked on a project with a community host partner while receiving weekly leadership and professional development trainings, and engaging in community projects and initiatives. I was placed with the Negro Educational Emergency Drive (NEED) under the leadership of the late Mr. Sylvester Pace. Mr. Pace charged me with designing and implementing an male mentoring program in partnership with The Neighborhood Academy. It was an overwhelming task, but under the amazing mentorship of Mr. Pace, the application of the trainings that I received from Coro Staff, and the support of  my colleagues, I not only completed the task assigned, I was asked to stay on to manage the program for several months after. That experience really served as a  jumpstart to my nonprofit career, and each time I reflect, I am amazed at how much I grew personally and professionally in those 10-weeks and how meaningful the relationships that I established with my peers and other community leaders have been.

That was when I first recognized the power that strong apprenticeship programs have and my goal is to ensure that each participant that serves with Public Allies Pittsburgh walks away with similar knowledge, support, and relationships.

    Public Allies Pittsburgh logo

3- What advice do you have for youth that want to become a changemaker in their community?

A changemaker is defined as someone who desires change in the world and, by gathering knowledge and resources, makes that change happen. My advice to youth who aspire to be changemakers is to not just desire the change or complain about injustice, but look for opportunities to serve others. One of my favorite quotes is, “Service is the rent we pay for living”. We all carry the responsibility and the beauty of service is that through it you have the opportunity to learn and grow. There are a TON of opportunities in local communities to take advantage of like programming available at the Kelly Strayhorn, or at your local library or YMCA or YWCA. We also have great community resources such as Pittsburgh Cares where you can find and sign up for service opportunities online. For those that are over 18 years of age, consider engaging in full-time service through programs like Public Allies Pittsburgh.

The point is to make a change you have got to get involved.

4-What is a song from your playlist?

  3. The Regent Theatre, a History

Centennial Celebrations Reflect on the History of the Regent Theatre

    By Trevor Miles

    9027920063_0698de9270_z

This year, The Kelly Strayhorn Theater is reflecting on the history of the building we call home.

Beginning as the Regent Theatre in 1914, the building was actually a movie house. However, after opening and closing several times, in 2001, the theater underwent a name change and took on a powerful new identity.

The Kelly Strayhorn Theater is named after performing greats Gene Kelly and Billy Strayhorn. The neon sign that lights up Penn Avenue is designed after their actual signatures! Kelly, an East Liberty native, rose to fame after working in his family’s dance studios in Squirrel Hill and Johnstown. After choreographing “Hold Your Hats” at the Pittsburgh Playhouse in 1938, Kelly landed his first Broadway assignment, and his career skyrocketed. His most notable work to date is Singin’ In The Rain, (1952).

Billy Strayhorn, Homewood native and pianist and composer, began studying classical music at Pittsburgh Music Institute. By age 19, he was writing music professionally, but faced opposition because of his race. He continued to work, and eventually met Duke Ellington in 1938, and the two worked together for the next 25 years. During his life, Strayhorn was openly gay and worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King for various civil rights causes.

Today, the Kelly Strayhorn Theater prides itself on presenting creative, daring and tantalizing contemporary works. The Fall 2014-2015 season boasted works by the legendary Carmen de Lavallade, and international artists, Moroccan-based performer Hind Benali and German artist Andre’ Koslowski. The centennial celebration will continue into the spring season with acts such as the Cuban dance company Malpaso, our SUNSTAR Woman’s Music Festival and KST’s newMoves Contemporary Dance Festival.

  5. My People Film Series: Season 6 Reflection

Recapping Season 6 of KST’s African American LGBTQIA Film Festival

    By Trevor Miles

    noshade_event2

The My People Film Series posed five questions to its guests during the month of November:

1 – How would you like to see KST get more involved in the LGBTQIA community?

    2 – My favorite LGBTQIA event/place in Pittsburgh is…

3 – What local LGBTQIA resource has been the most beneficial to you?

4 – There’s not enough ________ for me in Pittsburgh

5 – Who are you support system/LGBTQIA allies?

Duane Binion, Associate Producer reflects on the mission of My People.  “Our focus this year was to continue creating a safe space like we have done for the past six years, while getting a better sense of where our audience would like to see the Kelly Strayhorn Theater’s involvement in the LGBTQIA community here in Pittsburgh. This year we were able to spark important dialogue, and connect with community members that may not have ever been to our space, but can now feel comfortable in knowing that we here at KST are supporters of the community as whole with no judgement of race, sexual preference, or religion.”

Ryan Ricarte, Programming Associate at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater mentions the reason the My People film festival resonates with the Pittsburgh LGBTQIA community. “Historically, My People has been a way for KST to celebrate the life of Billy Strayhorn as an openly gay person of color, and I think as the series has matured, the focus of the series is to foster a safe place for those who think the safe spaces here in Pittsburgh aren’t safe enough.”

Below are some of the responses we received at the festival:
