We all have lost histories, an idea, inspiration, or occurrence forgotten or altered from the past. Our lost histories are powerful, sometimes hidden in our bodies, an inherited sweater, an old quilt, or fabric tucked into the pages of a fading photo album. Material of a Story is a moving, drawing, and writing workshop geared towards dance and theatre artists as well as all creative individuals interested in exploring personal lost stories that integrate fabric, words, and movement.

Participants will be led through a warm-up integrating improvisation, contemporary dance, and yoga. Following the warm-up, an all-levels section of repertory from Lost on a Loom will be taught for participants to engage in the artists’ creative process.

From there, participants will be led through a creative process of exploring their stories/lost histories through writing, drawing, improvisational movement exercises and explorations of fabric. Finally putting it all together, movers will weave portions of their personal explorations along with phrase work learned earlier in the session with an option to “perform” their pieces inspired by personal stories and explorations in movement and fabric.

All movements taught and explored will be modified to accommodate all skill levels and abilities. All are welcome. Difference, celebrated.
