PearlPRESENTS brings the work of STAYCEE PEARL dance project & Soy Sos in conversation with PearlDiving Movement Residency artists Raphael Xavier and Chitra Subramanian for a concert of dance performances on the KST mainstage. Xavier has been a professional breaker/dancer for the last 20 years. Subramanian’s work draws from Hip Hop and Indian Classical foundations.

Staycee Pearl is the Executive Co-Artistic Director of PearlArts Studios and STAYCEE PEARL dance project & Soy Sos, where she creates artful experiences through dance-centered multimedia works in collaboration with her husband and artistic collaborator, Herman Pearl. Staycee received her dance training at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. In 2009 SPdp&SS debuted at Kelly Strayhorn Theater. Since then the duo has produced several works OCTAVIA, FLOWERZ, and CIRCLES. Staycee is passionate about sharing resources and creating opportunities for the arts community.

 

Chitra Subramanian is a professional dancer, choreographer, and educator residing in the traditional territory of the Nacotchtank/Anacostan/Piscataway people (Washington, DC). A Pittsburgh native, and originally from South India, Chitra currently teaches, choreographs, and performs with an emerging collective of artists called chitra.MOVES. Her aesthetic draws from Indian classical and Hip Hop foundations to tell stories, meaningfully engage unseen/new audiences, and elevate artists.

 

Originally from Wilmington, Delaware, Raphael Xavier is an award-winning artist and alumnus of the world renowned Hip Hop dance company, Rennie Harris Puremovement. A 2013 Pew Fellowship Grantee, 2016 Guggenheim Fellow and 2016 United States Artist Fellow, Xavier has been a professional breaker/dancer for the last 20 years, working in a variety of fields including music, photography and film.
