Femininity. Sexuality. Perception. Expectation. Dressed in Red explores these ideas and our shifting self and social identities through a blend of movement and video performance. Inspired by Classical Chinese dance and contemporary movement, Dressed in Red reflects on Lucy’s experience of the complex relationship between how we see ourselves, how we present ourselves, and how others see us.
Utilizing video media and a costume that transforms throughout the performance, the dancers explore self-expression and connection/tension with their communities, within the lens of what it means to be feminine. Audiences witness an evolving narrative of feminine identity and are encouraged to contemplate their own experiences with their image, and how we perform our gender and sexuality.

- ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Lucy Chen is a dancer, graphic designer, and artist exploring the intersection of movement, shape, and culture. Her artistic practice examines the history of dance, the fusion of cultures in a global society, and how visual design can interact with movement. Trained in Chinese classical and folk dance, Lucy’s choreographic work interrogates the blend of traditional and modern dance styles. Lucy’s interest in waacking also informs her dance practice, using posing and punking to tell stories.
Anna Wei (she/her) is a dancer trained in Chinese dance, contemporary dance, Latin dance, open styles, and others. She is drawn to movement and expression that allow for the exploration of musical nuance, the acceptance and communication of ambiguities, and the cultivation of pure connections with aesthetics. For Anna, dance is both liberating and grounded. She is grateful for opportunities to keep learning, exploring, and telling stories that feel honest.

Jennifer Zhang (she/her) is from China and has loved dancing since childhood. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Dance and is now a second-year Arts Management graduate student.
