The Philippine-American Performing Arts of Greater Pittsburgh celebrates its 10th year with a recital featuring its most-loved folk dances over the years. Aptly titled “Alaala” meaning Memories, the program will host more than 40 first-, second-, and third-generation Filipino-Americans performing indigenous and foreign-influenced regional dances from a country made up of over 7000 islands. Highlights of the repertoire will include Banga-Ragragsakan where dancers balance clay pots or baskets on their heads; Sayaw sa Bangko where dancers perform stunts on multi-layered benches; and Singkil and Tinikling with dancers skillfully jumping between crisscrossing or clapping bamboo poles. Completing the program will be Spanish-influenced Maria Clara dances, traditional country dances, and innovative modern adaptations of some dances choreographed with contemporary moves and street-dancing styles.
