“The biennial celebration of the vast creative contributions of women in the arts, entrepreneurship and community has been busy making waves across and beyond East Liberty.” —Next Pittsburgh

SUNSTAR recognizes and celebrates the vibrancy and diversity of women in a variety of fields and disciplines, from the arts to business. The multi-day event highlights independent female artists who offer inspiration and encouragement. Along with performances, the festival has offered career development and coaching, community forums, and creative networking. Past programs have featured Grammy Award-winning group the Carolina Chocolate Drops, author Rebecca Walker, New York composer Samita Sinha, and local artists and leaders, Tania Grubbs, Staycee Pearl and Anqwenique Wingfield, among many others.

Rise & Shine – A Breakfast with SUNSTARS

Be inspired, inspire others, make new friends, or feed your heart and soul! SUNSTAR kicks off with an energizing and uplifting breakfast roundtable discussion at the KST Alloy Studios with treats catered by Black Radish Kitchen. Pull up a chair and take a seat at the SUNSTAR table: all are welcome here. A Breakfast with SUNSTARS creates a space to network and openly champion women, who are influencers, coaches, and mentors.

Moving in Orbit  w/ Anna Thompson

Join interdisciplinary artist Anna Thompson (of slowdanger) in a movement experience accompanied by the sounds of slowdanger. Inspired by her studies in somatic practices, BodyMindCentering, Laban Movement Analysis, Movement Theater, Mime, Gaga, and compositional studies, Anna will guide participants to investigate non-verbal processing mechanisms through movement, groove, and sensory stimulus.

This all-level workshop will challenge participants to explore connections to body, sound, and their environment. These connections will be used to play, investigate, and regenerate oneself.

Join us for an evening featuring a collective of Pittsburgh’s brightest stars performing across genre. Resounding SUNSTARS in Music features dynamic vocalist that own the stage, command the audience, and push boundaries like no other. From the highs to the low, there’s a song for all! – Featured performers include Blak Rapp M.A.D.U.S.A, Jocelyn Rent, Clara Kent, and Alona Williams.

Yoga Paint Party w/ Yogamotif

This early morning engagement invites you to use your body as a paintbrush to create a mess-free painting on your yoga mat. Think advanced finger-painting, without the mess and the stress. Sessions include one hour of yoga, materials, and an original painting that reflects your yoga flow.

Open to all-levels, Yoga Paint Party™ by Yogamotif celebrates your body (as is) and invites you to twist, turn, laugh, shimmy, and create in your own beautiful body.

SUNSTAR Vision  w/ Alisha B. Wormsley

Pittsburgh-based interdisciplinary artist and founder of the Afronaut(a) Film Series, Alisha B. Wormsley curates an inspiring afternoon of visionary works through short films, time-based media, and archived SUNSTAR performances that highlight women as beacons of resilience, sources of inspiration, and pillars of strength.

We are excited to announce the classic film “A Litany for Survival” by filmmakers, Ada Gay Griffen and Michelle Parkerson as our feature presentation for SUNSTAR VISION. “A Litany for Survival” takes a look at the potent legacy of Audre Lorde, a celebrated African American poet, whose life was cut short after a long battle with breast cancer.

Followed by a post-show discussion with Alisha B. Wormsley, Ada Gay Griffin.

SUNSTARS Speak  w/ RuggedANGEL and Shattered Glass Podcast

Join us at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater for the live recordings of the RuggedAngel and Shattered Glass Podcasts. These conversations will uplift the bold, powerful and compassionate, stories of local SUNSTARS.

SUNSTARS SPEAK features women led podcasters shining their light on the stories of motivated and industrious women leaders. Providing the space for them to share strategies around finding inspiration and personal joy. Each episode runs 40-60 minutes; stay tuned as we announce our special guests features this week!

Alloy Studios host an evening of original comedy that celebrates the honor, truth, and humor of womanhood. We promise to provide comfortable seats, not comfortable topics during a night of sketch comedy, improvisation, audience participation, and hilarious songs. Bring your mothers, daughters, sisters, girlfriends and anybody else looking for an honest and direct night of hilarity.  We promise you will leave laughing!
