Ring in holiday cheer with Resonance Works in a new film version of Engelbert Humperdinck’s beloved opera, Hansel & Gretel! In this modern reimagining of the 19th-century original, Hansel and Gretel are lost in the woods and stumble upon the set of a celebrity pastry chef’s cooking show, where they are invited to be the guest stars (and main ingredients!). The December 18 Premiere event will feature live performances by members of the Resonance Chamber Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Youth Chorus preceding the film premiere.

A co-production with Opera Ithaca, the film’s all-star cast includes sopranos Meghan Kasanders (Staastoper Hannover, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis) and Marlen Nahhas (Washington National Opera Cafritz Young Artist), mezzo-soprano Annie Rosen (Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago), and baritone Mario Diaz-Moresco (Chautauqua Opera), and a special partnership with the Pittsburgh Youth Chorus. Resonance Works’ Artistic Director Maria Sensi Sellner leads an octet of Resonance Chamber Orchestra players, in an orchestration originally created for Houston Grand Opera by Kathleen Kelly.

Resonance Works is an artist-driven, multi-modal performing arts company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania presenting performances that empower musicians and engage audiences since 2013. From fully staged opera to chamber music and commissioned works to classics, we create an alloy of unique and inclusive musical experiences for audiences in a variety of spaces. In order that our art reflects our community, Resonance Works has committed to programming at least half of the works in a season by women and a third by BIPOC creators, with the goal of normalizing equity, diversity and inclusion in our work and in the industry as a whole.

Resonance Works showcases an orchestra, chorus, vocal soloists, chamber musicians, staged opera, and musical theater – often on the same program. Featuring repertoire that is championed by its artists and themes that resonate with the current climate, Resonance Works connects the arts to today’s audience.
