9th annual newMoves Contemporary Dance Festival

KST Presents

EVENT DETAILS
Friday – Saturday / May 18 – 19, 2018
See Festival Schedule Below :: Map

“The evening felt significantly more bold … with work that ranged from technical to theatrical and, in some cases, an impressive blend of both.” Coal Hill Review KST’s newMoves Contemporary Dance Festival shines a spotlight on contemporary dance and on new and established talent here and outside of the region. Launched in 2009, the festival plays a vital role in the local dance scene by fostering new works and connections and encouraging choreographers to take creative risks. Most of the works are new projects in development and/or are produced by early-career artists. Audiences get the opportunity to hear innovative voices while artists share their work with a rich peer network. The performances, artist talks, master classes and symposia are designed to expand the minds of participants as KST provides a platform for contemporary dance practices.

Past festivals have introduced new works by some of Pittsburgh’s favorite dance artists, including Sidra Bell (NYC), Kyle Abraham (NYC), Marjani Forté (NYC), Staycee Pearl (Pittsburgh), slowdanger (Pittsburgh), and many more.

Movement Workshop // Exhalation Dance Theater
4pm – 5pm
KST Alloy Studios

Join the students of Exhalations Dance Theatre as they explore and expose movement in its most simple form. In today’s society, turns and extensions seem to be the focus, but movement is the foundation of dance. Simplicity is key; it can be beautiful and challenging on its own without distractions.

This all-level workshop will challenge participants to explore connections to body, sound, and their environment. These connections will be used to play, investigate, and regenerate oneself.

Movement Workshop // Chris Babingui
5:30pm – 6:30pm
KST Alloy Studios

In this workshop, Chris Babingui explores the dance form of Ekongo. Iboga-Odzanga is the original name for Ekongo, which means warrior rites. Its origins derive from the Kouyous and Mbochis tribes. This dance is a traditional war dance of the Congo Basin, carried out before each battle to galvanize the fighters and awaken the spirits of the ancestors. Babingui will share the basic dance steps of Ekongo, movement, footwork and rhythm. Chris will demonstrate how the Ekongo movements have similarities in contemporary dance and will share how the movements merge and overlap.

This movement workshop is designed to test the physicality of dancers across skill levels.

Festival Meet & Greet // A Conversation on Contemporary Dance in the Future
8pm
KST Alloy Studios

Join us for refreshments and a conversation about presenting artistic work led by newMoves festival choreographers. What makes dance unique in Pittsburgh? How does Pittsburgh value its artist? Learn what opportunities KST has for creative individuals. Share your stories and learn what opportunities the Kelly Strayhorn Theater has to offer.
