“What is it to be Black in France, Black and French?“. – This film examines the relationship between race and citizenship in the very unique French context, by following seven French women of African and Caribbean descent. France’s constitutional and legal discourses do not recognize race as a meaningful category, and in 2013, the National Assembly voted to remove all traces of the word from French legislation. Yet the lived realities of race and racism are ever-present in the experiences of Black French. This documentary unveils the hard reality of multiculturalism in the country, as well the many bridges that Afro-French are currently building with Black communities in the United States, Europe, Africa and the Americas.
This screening is part of a two-day event entitled “Blackness, Citizenship and the Arts: A Transatlantic Dialogue”
- March 22nd 2018 – The opening of a photo exhibit (“Black and Muslim in the West”) and the screening of “Mariannes Noires” followed by a Q/A with members of the cast from Paris.
- March 23rd 2018 – A one-day symposium with Black activists, artists and scholars from Pittsburgh and Paris.
