In this reimagined Nutcracker, set to the vibrant jazz sounds of Pittsburgh native Billy Strayhorn and jazz legend Duke Ellington, Clara embarks on a heartfelt coming-of-age journey. As she navigates the magic of the holiday season, Clara experiences her first crush—discovering the tender complexities of her closest female friendship and wondering if her feelings will be reciprocated. This innocent and soulful story unfolds through dynamic choreography, blending ballet and jazz, as Clara’s internal world mirrors Strayhorn’s quiet courage and profound legacy. Performed at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater, this production honors Strayhorn not only as a vital musical force but also as a pioneer of queer rights, celebrating love, community, and authenticity in a fresh, 21st-century interpretation of the classic tale.
