The weekend of May 19-21 marks the premiere performances of Fode “Lavia” Camara’s The
Legend of Kadiatou (Kadiatou kha Tarikhui). This work portrays the inspiring life story of Balafon’s
visionary founder “Mama” Kadiatou Conte in stunningly vibrant color and movement. Performed
by Balafon’s unique, intergenerational ensemble of dancers and musicians, this powerful tribute
will uplift and inspire you. Be sure to arrive early for time to browse the pop-up Black River market
for African fashion and goods.

This event is part of Balafon’s Black River African Dance Fest, an annual weekend that includes
hands-on dance intensives to learn traditional dances and song, and self-care breaks that will
spark joy, encourage wellness, and get you moving with others who love dance and movement,
at all ages and experience levels. Learn more and register for Saturday and Sunday dance
intensives at balafon.org.
