“They are dancing for their own lives and for the lives of women all over the world.” —Star Tribune, Minneapolis

World Stage Commission
Commissioned by KST and national partners, Ananya Dance Theater’s newest work takes its name from the Bengali word for “dark green,” and draws inspiration from the force that springs trodden grass back to life. In Shyamali: Sprouting Words, choreographer Ananya Chatterjea recognizes proactive dissent as a fuel for growth, and celebrates the courage of women who refuse to be broken, women who speak up, talk back, embody dissent and sustain their communities against injustice.

Chatterjea employs her expansive approach to contemporary Indian dance to powerfully express urgent issues of resistance and resilience. The company makes distinct use of rasa—the emotional expressivity of classical Indian dance—to invoke the aesthetic of the Dakini, a wrathful female spirit in Tantric Hinduism. Forged with fast, furious dancing that echoes histories of devastation and depletion, Shyamali journeys forward, into realms of rebirth, sustaining breath, and fluid, harmonious movement.

Performance runs 90 minutes without intermission.

PLUS: Artist dinner, master class and artist luncheon, artSEEDs youth program and Q&A
