RUNTIME: 90 Mins / No Intermission

Presented as part of newMoves Contemporary Dance Festival 2019
For her newest work of dance theater, Shaatranga: Women Weaving Worlds, Ananya Chatterjea asks the question “How do we show up for each other?”—and shares multifaceted stories of global women who express not only their pain, but the joy, laughter and labor that serves to make positive change in our world. Using the company’s signature remix of the classical Indian dance form Odissi, the martial art Chhau and Vinyasa yoga, her ensemble of eight dancers powerfully weave percussive and transformative dance with the energy of the gentle warrior.

Shaatranga: Women Weaving Worlds draws on histories of connectivity among the global South that pre-date colonization and slavery: links that threaded communities across Asia and Africa along Indian Ocean trade routes. In this thought-provoking dance, both indigo and denim serve as metaphors for the forces of global commerce that fall differently on our skin. Ananya Dance Theatre returns to KST—after captivating audiences with its expansive approach to contemporary Indian dance last fall. Chatterjea’s is widely recognized for her ritualistic performances and the depth of her community-building process, one that insists that the role of both women’s rage and their spiritual ecstasy be seen in the arc towards equity.

A centerpiece in this year’s 10th annual newMoves Contemporary Dance Festival a platform for local and National contemporary dance makers that fosters new works and new connections. Full festival program to be announced. Visit www.kelly-strayhorn.org.
