Bring your loved ones to experience the traditional rhythms and dances of West Africa. Classes involve grounding full body movements accompanied by live percussion and the occasional vocal song. This intergenerational class offers invigorating adaptive exercise for people of all ages and abilities.


ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Oronde S. Shariff is a lecturer, curriculum coordinator, and Director of Undergraduate Studies for the University of Pittsburgh Department of Africana Studies. Much of Oronde’s work and research interests include West African dance, Afro-Caribbean dance, Dunham Technique, and African-American dance. He directs the Shona Sharif African Drum and Dance Ensemble at Pitt. He received a 2007 Pittsburgh AACTA award for “Best Choreography in a Musical” for Black Nativity. He is a member of the International Association of Blacks in Dance and the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and he coaches the Nadia Track Club.

Celebrate the ten-week Alloy School journey with our Showcase and Let’s Move! Family Dance Party. The event includes a one-hour public celebration of learning during which each class will present a performance. The Showcase is followed by a family-friendly dance party for all. Community partners will be present hosting kids’ crafts throughout the dance party.
