Bill Shannon: Reverse Engineering Workshop
Penn Ave Creative Artist Residency
Sat/June 17, 2017
2 – 4p / KST Alloy Studios
5530 Penn Ave :: Map
In this energetic workshop, Bill Shannon teaches rhythm, holding patterns and body positions invented over his life of dance and play on crutches, with an emphasis on participants who don’t typically require them for mobility. Historically, specific dance forms have been emulated, modified and recreated by disabled dancers—ballet, modern, jazz, contemporary, hip hop dance all have disabled practitioners. Working without crutches, this workshop offers able-bodied dancers a rare opportunity to reverse that process, and to explore the challenges and creative possibilities of translating the highly specific movement vocabulary of an authentic disabled dance.
Movers who need crutches for mobility are also encouraged to participate, to learn the specifics of Shannon’s highly refined techniques.
