Presented in partnership with the Center for African American Poetry and Poetics (CAAPP) at the University of Pittsburgh
An evening that celebrates extraordinary writers who are also literary and cultural directors, and who happen to be black women. Featuring, Mahogany Browne, Dawn Lundy Martin, Nicole Sealey, and Salamishah Tillet, with moderator Amanda Johnston, this event will particularly honor Nicole Sealey’s work during her tenure as Executive Director and Programs Director of Cave Canem. It will also celebrate Cave Canem’s legacy of fostering fearless writing, providing artistic and professional support, and building a community for writers and readers of contemporary poetry.

Mahogany Browne, Artistic Director of Urban Word NYC, co-founder of Black Poets Speak Out,
recipient of Agnes Gund and Rauschenberg fellowships, and author of seven books including Black
Girl Magic

Dawn Lundy Martin, Director and co-Founder of the Center for African American Poetry and
Poetics at the University of Pittsburgh and winner of the 2019 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award for
Good Stock Strange Blood

Nicole Sealey, Executive Director of the Cave Canem Foundation, author of Ordinary Beast, and
2019-2020 Hodder Fellow and Rome Prize Winner in Literature

Salamishah Tillet, Associate Director of the Price Institute at Rutgers University – Newark,
Founding Director of the New Arts Justice Initiative at Express Newark, co-founder of A Long
Walk Home, and author three books including Sites of Slavery: Citizenship and Racial Democracy in Post-
