Groove Aesthetic: “Winds of the Sahel” with music by Joe Sheehan
KST Presents
Presented by Kelly Strayhorn Theater
Pianist and composer Joe Sheehan joins classically trained lyric soprano and jazz vocalist Anqwenique Wingfield for Winds of the Sahel — an evening of dancing, instrumental, hip-hop, classical, African, and folk music, as part of the ongoing Groove Aesthetic series.
Joe’s music celebrates and explores a tapestry of both song and dance from the roots of many musical cultures throughout the world. An independent study in 2008–2009 of traditional song and dance in Ghana, West Africa was especially influential on his musical language. West African music, as well as jazz, has informed recent pieces such as Vibraphone Loops, featuring a solo percussionist accompanied by soulful harmonies and synth loops; and Dances from Afar, a suite of three distinctive dances for violin and piano. Joe has also written nine original songs for the ensemble Kinetic, a group of Pittsburgh jazz musicians fluent in many other styles. Joe is Assistant Professor of Composition at Duquesne University.
