The FUTUREMAKERS Symposium brings neighbors together to activate personal and collective agency in a moment of rapid community transformation.

We at the Kelly Strayhorn are convening, with our neighbors—artists, producers, entrepreneurs, community planners and residents—a conversation about how WE can imagine and create together a neighborhood that works for all of us; a place where organic vitality is at the root of a vibrant community, a place that embraces the development to date and encourages active participation in making our neighborhood of the future.

Join us on Tuesday May 17, 2016 in East Liberty at KST Alloy Studios, Ace Hotel Pittsburgh and the Kelly Strayhorn Theater for intimate and dynamic exchanges among attendees, presenters, neighbors and friends in a day of conversations, performances and salon-style presentations. We will exchange action-based strategies for creating and sustaining our diverse and inclusive neighborhood.

The day culminates with F. Javier Torres, Director of Grantmaking for Artplace America, as he joins KST executive director janera solomon for a talk and conversation about creative placemaking as a tool for inclusive community building.

The FUTUREMAKERS Symposium is a collaboration with Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group’s Sixth Annual Community Development Summit,

  • When/Why does local government shape community (re)development and (re)investment?
  • How do artists, developers, business, and policymakers lead responsible growth together in a neighborhood?

We Call this Place Home :: With F. Javier Torres
Tuesday, May 17, 2016 :: 4pm – 5:15pm

Kelly Strayhorn Theater
Creating inclusive whole communities is an intentional act and set of actions and art is at the center. We believe culture, places, traditions, rituals are the fabric of community and make neighbors out of residents, and communities out of neighborhoods. In a neighborhood careful attention must be paid to these institutions for that community to feel alive; and for its residents to feel as though they belong to it.

Join F. Javier Torres, Director of Grantmaking for Artplace America, for a talk and conversation w/ KST executive director janera Solomon, about the role artists and cultural producers can play in preventing cultural displacement.
